September 2021 in Crafts: Returning to my roots

Updated: Feb 9, 2022

September was one busy month. With school starting, I realized I might have taken on more than I can handle, with work, school, club activities, and my own crafting time. Since time to craft has been limited, my focus this month has been less on experimenting and exploring new things and more of a return to what is most familiar to me.

Fulfilling requests

Several people requested crochet whales so in the beginning of this month before things picked up, I focused on fulfilling those requests and delivering the whales to their new homes. My mom saw these and even asked me to make one for her too! With some of my extra time I also made an amigurumi Ootori-sama from Spirited Away.

Trying something new

I did get the chance to try something new this month - diamond painting! Diamond painting is sort of like a mix between cross-stitch and paint-by-numbers. Instead of painting, you need to stick little colorful gems in the corresponding spots on the canvas.

I got this for my birthday and I didn’t expect it to be such a long laborious process. I can see how people can find the process calming and even meditative but for me, I can only do a little bit every day because after a while my back starts to hurt. I think it will take me several days, if not weeks to complete, so look forward to seeing the completed piece then in the future.

Back to my roots

Since time to craft is limited, I wanted to stick to the things that are comfortable and familiar to me. Trying new things and experimenting is a slow process and I do want to be able to dedicate my full attention to it when I can.

Years ago, one of the first crafts I started working hard on was hand sewing plushies. I fell out of it for a couple of years but recently I have been inspired by the game Among us to make a new pattern. Prototyping and making adjustments is a longer process than I remember but so far I’m happy with the results and I really want to continue making plushies again.

What’s coming in October

October means spooky season and spooky season means spooky crafts. I don’t have many high goals for crafting because I anticipate being much busier due to school and work. I do still want to create a collection of Among us characters and at least one spooky craft. I’m still continuing the art challenge, albeit at a slower/delayed pace. You are still welcome to join at any time! This week’s prompt is Summer, so you can celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of Fall.
