6 Adorable Things To Make From 1 Amigurumi Base

Updated: Feb 9, 2022

Recently my eyes have been opened to the versatility of crochet. I haven’t done much of it before but it was very easy to pick up and dive into. I’m a big fan of amigurumi and as a beginner, I wanted something basic but extremely adaptable. Well, I am proud to present to you the plain amigurumi base! This little yarn potato has so much potential and I’m going to show just a few of those possibilities.

How to make the base

I followed the Spruce Craft crochet sphere tutorial for my base, with a few changes. I found that it was easy for a beginner to follow and only took a couple practice rounds to really get into the groove of crocheting.

For my amigurumi base I increased for 5 rounds, did a normal chain stitch for 10 rounds, then decreased by 5 rounds again. Of course, you are free to change up the proportions as much as you like and experiment with the results. One helpful tip is that I used a paperclip as a stitch marker by inserting it into the first loop of every round. This was a huge help because I lose count very very easily and so the stitch marker helped me stay on track.

Bear/panda

With two round ears, eyes, nose, and feet this plain base could become a cute round bear. These can either be crocheted or cut out of felt and sewn or glued on. I have a particular soft spot for pandas, which can be done by switching colours to black halfway up and then back to white again. I find that this is a great tutorial for a near seamless colour change.

I love the idea of making the 3 bare bears and stacking them up.

Sushi

This was suggested to me on Instagram and I think it’s a fantastic idea! Simply crochet a rectangle slightly longer and wider than your potato. The number of stitches will depend on the size of your yarn and hook. Depending on the kind of sushi you can make it orange with white stripes like salmon or red with white stripes like tuna. There are as many variations as there are types of sushi.

Your favorite character

I kept this vague because I think you could make any character you want. For example, by varying the base colors, gluing some details out of felt and adding a tiny scarf, you can make Harry Potter. I like felt accessories because they are easy to make and add on.

Tsum-Tsum

Tsum-Tsums are undeniably adorable. I had a time when I played the mobile game every day on the train to and from work. These are characters as well, so the process is similar to the one above. Accessories can be crochet or felt, depending on the amount of detail required.

Cat

I am a cat lover, so I am very excited to transform this amigurumi base into an adorable feline. All you need are cat ears, feet, and a long tail. You can change up the colors to make tabby cats, black cats, or a mini version of your own pet.

What else do you think you can make from this base? Personally, I am quite excited to build my own collection of Tsum-Tsums. Please show me your creations by tagging me on Instagram or Twitter @thenerDIYblog!
